Actually...no, it's not bad for your health. And fluoride does not hurt or damage your teeth. I don't understand why people insist on putting their two sense in when they're not professionals. First off, you get more radiation talking on the phone or watching television than you do getting x-rays. We have our machine on a very low setting. The reason you wear a lead vest is because every private practice clinic has to exercise safety precautions. The same reason you're "supposed" to wear some kind of eye protection when you recieve dental care. Fluoride actually makes the enamel of the teeth stronger and helps fight against cavities. That's why they put it in our (faucet) drinking water. That is also why we prescribe ACT rinse to our patients so they can give themselves fluoride treatment whenever they're away from the clinic. So, to answer your question, it is not hazardous to your health. Always ask the DOCTOR questions if you have any, instead of asking non-professional people.
Is it hazardous to your health to get dental x-rays every 6 months?
Dental X-rays actually have little radiation, but it is still best to have them as little as possible. You really only need a Panoramic X-ray every 5 years and Bitewings every 18 months. Your dentist may also take PA's on teeth that are giving you problems as they see fit.
Reply:No, that's standard procedure when you go had a semi-annual checkup with your dentist. The cover your body with the lead-lined vest and take every precaution. You don't need to worry.
Reply:Yes definately.
High dose radiation cannot be good for you. Why is it they wear lead aprons?
Flouride is bad for your mental health too - refuse that - unless you want flourosis and an IQ under 100.
Ask your dentist what flourosis is !
Reply:No it's not...the average person is exposed to more Xrays from other sources everyday just walking around than they are exposed to when they visit the dentist.
Reply:I just had to answer this one. I recommend xrays every 12 - 18 months. Insurance will pay once a year.
Dental xrays are minimal (especially digital ones) as far as exposure goes, but yes too much is just that... too much.
We have the patients wear a lead apron to protect them from scatter radiation. Its the result after the actual xray has been taken. Over time, with an extreme amount of exposure, this still WOULDN"T be a potential problem in dental xrays.
ALSO, fluoride only causes fluorosis in children who still have teeth to erupt. DIGESTING fluoride and having unerupted teeth, MAY cause that child's teeth to erupt with a fluorosis issue.
I wonder what Mr. No-It-All's IQ is....
EDIT: Learn how to spell fluoride....... :)
Reply:While it's not hazardous, there's very little reason to have cavity x-rays every 6 months. Once every year or even two is sufficient if you aren't cavity prone.
Reply:Bite wings?? no problem amt radiation is very small . Notice next time how short a time it buzzes. Doc W
