My rat keeps chewing on his new cage. Should I be worried about the health of his teeth?

I just purchased new cages for my rats. Besides the emotional stress, which I know I'm putting them under by re-arranging my whole room and buying them new cages at once, should I be concerned about the way he's chewing on his cage?

I know that it is probably temporary, and it'll probably subside, but, I'm still concerned about my rat's dental health. Are chewing on the bars of his cage safe?

It is safe and many rats will do it. Rodent teeth grow constantly and if they do not have toys, wood, etc to chew on, they will find a substitute.

Your rat needs wood toys to wear down the teeth. Giving toys may stop the cage chewing but it is no guarantee. My rats all chew on the bars of the cage.

Reply:Rodents chew, that's just what they do.
Reply:if he is not chewing on stuff, even metal, then you should worry. his teeth grow fast and he is doing this to wear them down to the appropriate size. read any book about rats and you will find this info
Reply:no, not at all they were evolved to chew through nearly anything. But don't let the situation get out of hand or you'l have a missing rat with a possible tooth ache.

good luck you'll know if it goes too far.
Reply:i think its fine. i used to have hamsters that chewed up the whole plastic covering top thingy and it would escape sometimes!! and my hamsters sometimes used to do it for attention. like when they want to get out.

my rabbit does this to the toilet it gave him. grr...

anyways, as long as the teeth does not crack, i think it would be quite fine. rats have strong teeth that grows during their entire lifetime. maybe they're just sharpening it by chewing at the bars so give them some blocks of wood or something to chew at instead (they sell these at local petstores, petsmart, petco, petfood express... etc)
Reply:All rodents chew. It's normal, don't worry. The only worry you should have about the teeth is if one of them falls out or they become too long or overlapping. Then its time to take him to the vet. But rodents teeth continuelly grow, and they get worn down by them chewing. That's a good thing.
